New Report On The Benefits Of Physiotherapy for People With MSK Conditions.
Arthritis Research UK has recently produced a fascinating report about the benefits of physical activity interventions (including physiotherapy) for people with musculoskeletal conditions such as osteoarthritis or back pain. Produced in conjunction with the Department of Health, Public Health England and NHS England, it is endorsed by the Royal College of GPs and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists. It confirms a lot of what we have found in practice. Before we run through some of the key findings, it’s worth pointing out some pretty shocking statistics:
-More than 10 million people in the UK live with the pain of a MSK condition
-A third of people over 45 have sought treatment for osteoarthritis
-9 million people in the UK have persistent back pain
-14,000 people die each year following a hip fracture
MSK conditions are incredibly common and can be very debilitating, and they now account for the third largest area of NHS spending. They also place a large burden on GPs.
There are many people that see them as an inevitable part of growing older but we believe, and this report confirms, that many of their effects can be mitigated or even completely prevented given the right treatment, advice and exercise.
The report recommends light to moderate exercise undertaken by patients themselves, as well as supervised higher intensity activities and physical interventions by physiotherapists to ensure good joint health and posture. Many people incorrectly believe these things will make them feel worse but they have been shown to have a positive impact, both physically and mentally, for people with MSK conditions. We would always recommend consulting a professional before embarking on a new physical activity programme, but the general consensus is that: moving more can help prevent MSK conditions, and can alleviate the associated symptoms even after they have set in.
